CRITICAL APPRAISALS

"The author makes an interesting experiment, combining the aesthetics of the Japanese species with Western ways, embroidering it with themes and literary motifs from mythology, from Romanian folklore." (Ioana Bud)

"D. Onaca observes, notes and, more than taking emotional photos of the moment, manages to include in three lines a film with cursive images, prolonged in eternity. " (Matei Mircioane)

"Daniel Onaca stepped into the realm of haiku as an author born in Romanian, knowledgeable about the way of speaking of the people of Banat (which he highlights in his creations), but also living in Sweden." (Marius Chelaru)

"The poet and writer Daniel Onaca takes the art of Romanian haiku to new dimensions, as demonstrated by his books published at Coresi Publishing House." (Vasile Poenaru)

"We can retrace Daniel Onaca's itinerary, from the Swedish village hidden in the deep forests of Småland, Sweden, where he lives, to the Dobrogean lands where summer returns periodically, but also the subsequent spiritual itinerary, from confrontation with the rigors of Scandinavian winter, to its exorcism by meeting the brilliance of the Black Sea (...) The feelings expressed in the collection are triggered both by the events of the immediate world and by those that occurred in the native country, to which the author is always attentive, and which send their echo in the text. ” (Marina Cușa)

"Daniel Onaca's Japanese poems transcend any known creative localism; they do not "happen" here or there, but everywhere. The author writes transdisciplinary, like a true citizen of the world, unmistakably affirming a mark of post-literature and post-humanism. The miniature universe fits him perfectly, as long as he is aware that he has at his disposal an infinity of lives, which appear and evaporate rapidly, each under the influence of another sun. Daniel Onaca writes encyclopedically, and his cycles are collections of fragments from various cultures, from various civilizations, from various eras, lived simultaneously and brought up to date and then saved through unifying archaeological, museum, bibliographic visions. ” (Angela Furtună)

"Daniel Onaca certainly has the gift of great storytellers aware of the initiatory function of mythical stories. The source of inspiration is an ancestral Sweden, in which the characters endowed with the grace of saying carry on a tradition in which myths are reinvented, to serve an implicit educational purpose. The seed of truth consecrated by legend is inserted in the journey of the narrator-character, an alter-ego of the writer - curious and well anchored in the traditional horizon of Swedish culture, as announced by the title Strange stories on the shores of fishermen. (Andra Tischer)

Beyond the reconditioned "fairy tale", Daniel Onaca's narrative is a "textbook", which does not lack memories, even small notes, dating from various times, part of what even means the author's biography. [...] Wide compositions, with overlapping times and narrative details, not without poetic sequences, knowingly slipping meditations about the purpose of life and the ways to fulfill it, these fairy tales find their "purpose" in reading those for that the world still has a "purpose". (Ada D. Cruceanu)
